a rescue can be used when an unlit square can only possibly be lit by one other square. for instance, in this configuration (462):
the red square can only be lit by the “cross” centered at it. however, all other squares in the cross besides the red square itself are already lit or X’d out. thus, it follows that the red square itself must be lit.
